Children & Families

We all know that there is no manual to raising a resilient, confident, secure child. Some children can manage their emotions with ease and adult guidance and some children need additional support to manage emotional stressors. Many children have unique emotional, behavioral and developmental needs that can best supported through an individually tailored approach, while engaged in family counseling. Anxiety disorders are very common in young children. Most issues related to childhood anxiety can be resolved through short term therapy consisting of family counseling and child focused cognitive-behavioral therapy where a child learns to control their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

We will work together to support you in your own unique journey and help you create an action plan and find solutions that will meet your family's needs.

COVID-19 Pandemic as it relates to Anxiety and Stress

It is no surprise that anxiety comes in many forms and can be triggered by many variables.

The COVID-19 Pandemic has affected many individuals and has caused an increase in undue anxiety, stress, depression, and trauma, to name a few. Children are still trying to understand why things are shut down, why there are mandatory mask policies, why they cannot go to their favorite restaurant or sporting events. While children can sometimes appear that they understand, these feelings and misunderstanding can manifest in others ways, such as but not limited to crying, excess moodiness, meltdowns, becoming physical with themsleves or others.

For many, the uncertainty surrounding coronavirus is the hardest thing to handle, but there are many things we can do, even during this unique time, to manage anxiety and fears.

AUTISM AND NEURODIVERSITY

One of my specialties is supporting the mental health needs of children, teens and young adults with ADHD, Autism, Learning Disorders, and other neuro-developmental, learning and sensory differences. Family therapy can help caregivers develop better understanding of the unique needs and strengths of their child.

You may be thinking of these questions and unsure how to proceed:

  • "How do I get my child evaluated for ADHD, Autism, or a Learning Disorder?"

  • "How and when do I tell my child about their diagnosis?"

  • "How can I best support my child to help them reach their potential?"

  • "How do I help my child be independent and feel confident about themselves?"

  • "How can my child make friends and maintain those friendships?"

Children and teens benefit from counseling by learning ways to be in control of their own mind and body, manage their emotions, bounce back from disappointments, navigate social relationships and adapt to change. Individual counseling can be instrumental in helping children and adults develop a positive self-image and self-accepting attitude. Our goal is to help each person feel empowered by knowing how to advocate for themselves and be successful in all areas of their lives.
